Greenville, N.C. – The Yard Gnomes held off the Holly Springs Salamanders in a tightly contested 3-1 victory Wednesday night at Guy Smith Stadium. Jacob Boland anchored the win with six scoreless innings on the mound, while Jacob Green, Jesse Ponce, and David Lillis each chipped in an RBI to pace the offense.
Greenville (15-23) jumped on the board early in the first inning when David Lillis drove in Luke Miller with a single to right field.
The Gnomes added another run in the second as Jacob Green brought home Nick Palmi with an RBI single to extend the lead to 2-0.
In the sixth, Greenville tacked on its final run of the night. Green scored on a sacrifice fly to right off the bat of Jesse Ponce, pushing the lead to 3-0.
Holly Springs (17-20) broke the shutout in the seventh when Miles Shore came around to score on a fielding error at first base.
Andrew Hansen closed the door in the ninth, retiring the side to earn the save.
Boland (W, 1-1) earned the win, tossing six shutout innings with four strikeouts and no walks. Jacob Kirby (L, 0-2) took the loss for Holly Springs, giving up two earned runs and four walks over 3.1 innings.
