Greenville, N.C. – The Greenville Yard Gnomes fell to the Morehead City Marlins in a lopsided 20-2 contest Sunday night at Guy Smith Stadium.
The Marlins (4-2) broke through in the third inning, starting with Nate Anderson’s RBI double down the right-field line to score Tyler LeJeune. Wyatt Stanley followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Broedy Poppell, and Chase Bloomer capped the inning with an RBI single to center, plating Anderson to make it 3-0.
Greenville (2-6) answered in the bottom half of the third when Danny Ramirez lifted a sacrifice fly to score Corey Berry, trimming the deficit to 3-1.
The game quickly got away from the Yard Gnomes in the fourth, as Morehead City erupted for seven runs. DJ Pacheco launched a solo home run to lead off the inning, followed by another RBI double from Anderson and a three-run homer from Stanley. Pacheco later added an RBI single in his second at-bat of the frame, and Nick Gustafson capped the rally with an RBI single to right center.
The Gnomes managed a second run on a daring steal of home from Will Applegate following a failed pickoff attempt, but that would be the last of their offense.
Nate Anderson powered the Marlins with a monster night at the plate, going 4-for-5 with 6 RBIs. Wyatt Stanley added 5 RBIs on two hits. Anderson, Stanley, Pacheco, and Andrew Meyers each went deep.
Jared Guell picked up the win for the Marlins, pitching two innings and allowing two runs on three hits. Quinn Holt took the loss for the Yard Gnomes, surrendering three runs across three innings.
Up Next: The Yard Gnomes head to Holly Springs on Wednesday for a morning matchup with the Salamanders. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
