On August 27th, 2024, the Coastal Plain League (CPL) announced the 2024 All-CPL First and Second team rosters. Jack Herring (East Carolina University) made First Team All-CPL and Aden Howard (University of San Diego) and Joe Siervo (Western Kentucky University) made Second Team All-CPL, all as outfielders. The trio of outfielders showed off power, speed, and their gloves many times throughout the inaugural season of Yard Gnomes baseball.
Joe Siervo became a fan favorite in Greenville at the Gnome Opener on May 24 where he went 2-3 at the plate with a stolen base. Siervo scored 3 of the teams five runs and collected an RBI on the first home run in Yard Gnomes history. Siervo also flashed the leather in the inaugural game with several diving catches. The incoming junior at Western Kentucky continued the opening day success throughout the season collecting 35 hits, 12 RBIs, 28 runs, and 18 stolen bases.
Aden Howard spent his freshman year at Dallas Baptist before transferring to the University of San Diego for the upcoming season. With the Yard Gnomes, Howard sported a .340 season batting average. In 2024, Howard collected 36 hits, 8 doubles, 1 triple, and 13 RBIs. Howard also scored 28 runs and led the team with 26 stolen bases in just 28 games. July 3rd was Howard’s big day where he went 3-4 at the plate with 1 double, 1 home run (his lone home run of the season), 5 RBIs, and stole 4 bags in a 15-5 win against the Peninsula Pilots.
Jack Herring, the lone First Team selection for the Yard Gnomes, became “Mr. Greenville” at Yard Gnomes games following his announcement on July 12th to finish his collegiate baseball career as an East Carolina Pirate! Following his commitment, Herring went on a 10 game hitting streak in which he had a .410 batting average (16 for 39), collected 3 home runs (including a grand slam in his first game in Greenville as an ECU transfer), and racked up 13 RBIs. Throughout the entire 2024 summer, Jack Herring had a .312 batting average with 49 hits, 24 runs scored, 7 doubles, 8 home runs, and 36 RBIs. Jack Herring finished fourth in the Coastal Plain League in home runs and RBIs and was tied for 6th in hits.
Making the All-CPL team is just the latest of accomplishments that the Yard Gnomes outfield has collected. Earlier in the summer, both Aden Howard and Jack Herring were named members of the CPL Select Team. As members of that team, they were able to represent the Yard Gnomes in an exhibition game where the CPL Select team faced the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. Shortly after that, the full trio of Herring, Howard, and Siervo were selected to represent the Yard Gnomes once again as members of the East Division CPL All-Star team. Jack Herring was named a starter for the All-Star game and all three played a role for the East Division in a closely contested game that eventually ended in a 4-4 tie. The trio of outfielders for the Yard Gnomes played huge roles for the team this summer and will look to continue that success with their respective university this upcoming spring.
